Abstract: |
Monitoring of the test pits and foundation trench systems revealed a sequence of archaeological deposits relating to 19th century development overlying the disturbed remains of a probable wooden revetment which may have been associated with a revetment encountered during the 2002 evaluation. Several glimpses of both sea walls were viewed during some areas of the site, revealing it lay, in some places, as little as 0.50m below the modern ground level. Additional deposits and finds of note included a substantial worked masonry timber post setting recovered on the south side of the position of the walls (hence in the water) as well as re-used sea wall limestone slabs, used in the foundations for the 19th century development.
