Abstract: |
A review of existing archaeological and historical data, together with a brief site investigation, was undertaken to provide an initial assessment of the likely archaeological implications of the proposed road improvements to the A37 between Prowle's Cross Toll House and the Somerset/Dorset County Boundary. Of principle interest was the potential, though unproved, existence of a former Roman road between Dorchester and Ilchester which is assumed to lie beneath the present road. The study was unable to substantiate or disprove its presence. The primary areas of archaeological interest identifiable within the area covered by the proposed scheme lay in the presence of a number of 19th century or earlier cottages adjacent to the present road, and the existence of former field boundaries, holloways and a quarry (Report No. 5695/1/0).
