Abstract: |
Aerial photographs of the proposed landfill site showed possible rectilinear enclosures and a possible palaeochannel in the area. Within the proposed site was an extant Second World War pillbox, one of several in the area that formed part of the Thames coastal defences. The existing landfill site contained Lower Palaeolithic material, including an in situ tool assemblage. The site was close to minor settlement sites which appeared to have had at least intermittent occupation since the Bronze Age through to the present day. There was also a potential for organic and alluvial deposits to have survived in the possible palaeochannel. [Au(abr)] |
