Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation of land required for a new bridge on the edge of the medieval village was carried out in December 1994, involving background research, resistivity survey and the excavation of three trial trenches. The existing bridge of 1908 was preceded by a ford and footbridges dating back to the 17th century and probably earlier. No traces are visible, but remains of abutments may survive below ground. To the east of the bridge the resistivity results suggested an oval earthwork house plot might contain two buildings. Trenching of one revealed timber settings, and a second trench showed the ground made up by the dumping of layers of domestic rubbish. The plot was occupied in the 13th - early 14th centuries and then abandoned, although another plot to the north was occupied until the late 18th/early 19th century. A second earthwork platform to the east had been disturbed by 18th century ditches and a World War II Home Guard gun emplacement.[AIP] |
