Abstract: |
A building survey was carried out and an evaluation trench excavated at the site of a Grade II Listed barn which was to be converted into a dwelling. The building was a late 18th or early 19th century brick threshing barn of piecemeal reconstruction, containing the remains of a significant and historically important medieval cruck-framed barn. Ponds and earthworks representing former ponds of uncertain date and function lay in the vicinity of the barn. Excavation of the trial trench revealed a disturbed red-brick floor which overlay two thin make-up deposits and a clay layer. Removal of the clay layer revealed an uneven clay surface, with sub-rectangular and irregular depressions. These did not have the character of discrete negative features such as post-holes, and were tentatively interpreted as partial internal levelling and clearance for scaffolding posts associated with a phase of reconstruction of the barn. A non-preferred alternative explanation was that they represented incidental disturbance to the clay surface resulting from horticultural, gardening or other activity. A white-glazed potsherd and an iron object were noted, but were not retained. [AIP] |
