Abstract:
An archaeological evaluation of land was undertaken ahead of the proposed excavation of a bungalow within the SAM of Salmonsbury Camp, an Iron Age defended site. Two trenches were excavated which revealed cut features including pits, gullies and a possible large ditch. The features were sealed by a thick soil deposit containing limestone rubble and slabs. Although appearing disturbed in some places, the soil deposit contained concentrations of stones which may have been structural remains. Provisional dating of the features and layers placed them in the early 2nd century AD. However, the dating was complicated by the presence of much native style pottery, and some features may have been Late Iron Age in origin. The evaluation evidence supported the conclusions of a previous desktop assessment. It suggested Roman, and possibly Late Iron Age occupation, was intensive across the entire study area and that the deposits remained largely intact and at relatively shallow depth below the modern ground surface.
