Abstract: |
A watching brief was undertaken during the excavation of three soil investigation test pits. Recorded within Test Pit 2 was a feature cutting the underlying gravel which may have been either man-made or a naturally occurring watercourse, possibly running east to west across the site. The grey sandy clayey gravel fill of this feature was similar to the pit and ditch fills of prehistoric features previously found on other site within the Wandle Valley. Fine chalk deposits recorded within Test Pit 3 were similar to the river deposited layers found to the south-west of the site at Stratham House. This site produced peat deposits dating to the Mesolithic period, which were overlain by a silty clay with chalk flecks derived from the North Downs. Such evidence suggests that the origins of the Pickle may be traced back to the prehistoric period possibly as a more substantial watercourse or braided channel of the Wandle. However, more extensive analysis of the sedimentary deposits would be needed to be certain. [Au(adp)] |
