Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment of the proposed route of a bypass, which crossed the Essex/Suffolk county boundary, identified that scatters of prehistoric, Roman and medieval artefacts had been recorded on the route. A WWII pill box and an undated cropmark representing a linear double ditched feature had also been recorded. Further cropmarks and artefact scatters lay in the vicinity, and the sites of a Victorian brickworks, a 15th century farmhouse, two kilns and a windmill lay in the area. It was concluded that a full record of the pill box should be made if this were to be directly affected by the development, and that trial trenching of artefact scatters and identified features should be carried out.
