Abstract: |
The evaluation, consisting of the excavation of eight trial pits, was undertaken prior to the conversion of the current building into a retail unit. With the exception of an infilled pit observed in trial pit 3, the earliest evidence of occupation was represented by a wall and floor located in pits 4 and 5 and a stone chamber seen in pit 3. Although it could not be conclusively demonstrated stratigraphically, the marked similarity of the nature of the walls and their relative alignments indicated that these features were contemporary. The alignment of the wall exposed in pits 4 and 5 did not conform to that of the standing building or the earlier smithy that appeared to have occupied the site from at least 1840. It was suggested that it related to an earlier building, possibly of 18th century date. [Au(adp)] |
