Abstract: |
The site of the former CMA depot was being redeveloped. The site lay adjacent to an archaeological priority zone and was previously part of a Saxon cemetery. The site was subject to extensive grave digging from 1914 to 1919 that had resulted in the recovery of a large number of graves. Further grave digging from 1919 to 1922 found no further remains and the edge of the cemetery was identified. The site was late quarried. Recent evaluations and archaeological stripping found no trace of any archaeological remains or finds beyond the edge of the gravel quarry. These results combined with the lack of evidence recovered during the excavations from 1919-1922 confirmed that the edge of the cemetery was excavated by the London Museum and Col. Bidder in 1919, within the area now occupied by a gravel quarry on site. [Au(abr)] |
