Abstract: |
A watching brief was undertaken during the excavation of foundations during new development across the school yard. The trenches were cut through either made up ground or natural flinty gravel. The sole exception to this was a dark greyish, silty clay deposit at the base of a trench in the south east corner of the site the deposit contained fragments of bone, tile, burnt pebbles, flecks of chalk and 4 body sherds of Hertfordshire Grey ware pottery. It was interpreted as a bank-like feature which could have run parallel to the course of the River Ver. The presence of so much occupation debris suggested that it was possibly a refuse dump of some kind. The pottery would date it to between 1150-1300 AD. [Au(adp)] |
