Abstract:
The archaeological potential of the site was moderately high on account of its location and the known history of the area. The site had no record of archaeological work having been undertaken on it in the past. Archaeological evidence was likely to have been present for the Bronze Age/Iron Age. An evaluation carried out in an adjacent area in April 1997, indicated a shallow ditch and pit dating to the Late Bronze Age or Early Iron Age. The results of the excavation indicated that some features extended beyond the limits of that excavation and would encroach onto the site at Christmas Lane. Cropmarks to the east of the site also indicated possible occupation in the immediate area, including one interpreted as a Bronze Age round barrow in the Kent SMR. The site also lay on an area of high ground just to the south of a number of Romano-British salt-panning sites. The small industrial areas on the marshes were probably connected within more permanent settlement. [Au(abr)]
