Abstract:
A small evaluation of the tower of the church was undertaken in response to an application for Faculty to repair, refurbish and re-floor areas of the two of the church. A basic photographic survey of the areas of work was also completed in advance of the refurbishment, internal re-flooring and external paving to the tower. The tower of St Mary's dated from c.1630 though the nave and aisles of the church were comprehensively rebuilt in the early and later 19th century. It was likely that the present church closely followed the alignment and form of its medieval precursor, although the extent of this had not been archaeological proven. The evaluation revealed redeposited burial soil to the west of the tower, while excavations below the floor inside of the tower revealed a rubble levelling deposit for the existing flagstone floor. No archaeological features were revealed or finds recovered. [Au]
