Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken during mains sewer trenching in the historic village of Grove. The watching brief was limited to the stripping of the sewage treatment works, and the trenching on the pipe route within the historic part of the village. Everywhere it was inspected, the trench revealed clays interpreted as weathered Mercia Mudstone beneath the modern road makeup. A water culvert of possible 17th century date was cut through the clays. A small amount of unstratified animal bone was also recovered from the trench at this point. The lack of archaeological features seen suggested that the route of the current main road through the village did not overlie earlier occupation, while its location in a marked holloway supported the supposition that its course was of ancient origin, and may not have changed significantly since the original layout of the village.
