Abstract: |
Peat samples taken from the river had a radiocarbon date of 6415-6185 BC, unusually early and placing the peat deposit within the Mesolithic period. Above these early levels was clean, homogenous clayey alluvium. Although undated, these river deposits were recorded in all the trenches and were sealed by 18th century consolidation dumps. There was evidence of five brick buildings alongside Old Bridge Street. In trench 3 there was a late 17th century building. Two 19th century buildings followed. Beneath one of them were the truncated remains of another 17th/18th century building and fragments of decorated Delft wall tiles dated 1760 to 1790. In trench 4 there was a curved wall belonging to a mid-19th century house. This was probably the continuation of one of the buildings found in trench 3. A series of linear cuts running east-west and others north-south were probably garden features such as bedding trenches and dated to the 18th century. [Au] |
