Abstract: |
An excavation was carried out in Charterhouse Square in Islington, funded by the landowners Charterhouse Estates at the behest of the RCHME Survey of London section who were undertaking a survey of the Charterhouse. A geophysical survey of Charterhouse Square had suggested the location of a chapel built in 1481 and the trench was designed to locate it and to establish whether there was any archaeological evidence for burials from the Black Death. No evidence of the chapel was located but a single burial of a child was found. It was not possible to definitively indicate that the burial was interred during the Black Death as there is documentary evidence that later burials were made in the Square. However its stratigraphic position and the dating evidence suggested that it did date to the period of the Black Death cemetery (1348/9). [Au] |
