Abstract: |
The archaeological excavation produced evidence for medieval activity that implied the site had largely been open ground, possibly pastureland. Two, possibly medieval, linear ditches with opposing terminals forming a possible entranceway were identified, believed to have been field boundaries. Subsequent medieval activity comprised pits and gullies. Evidence for repeated reinstatement of boundary features implied that the same property boundaries were respected throughout the medieval and early post-medieval periods until the early 18th century. Evidence of 18th century buildings on the site implied an expansion of the settlement into previously open areas. Late 18th century walls, forming property boundaries and buildings overlay the earlier boundary ditches, suggesting that boundaries formed in the earlier medieval period were still respected in the late 18th and 19th centuries despite a change in a land use. These boundaries were still extant at the time of the last demolition of the site. [Au(abr)] |
