Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during the excavation of foundation trenches for an extension to a shop. Post-medieval pottery and a post-medieval yard surface had been observed in the vicinity; development in the area had first been documented in the late 12th century. During the watching brief, layers of post-medieval rubble were observed which may have formed a sequence of yard surfaces. Beneath these were a series of layers, the lower three of which were waterlogged. These contained medieval pottery, animal bone, mussel shells and a leather shoe sole, material which ranged in date from the 12th-16th centuries. The waterlogged layers may have represented the fills of a large pit or ditch which periodically contained standing water. No structural remains were found, but the artefacts recovered represented a domestic rubbish assemblage, suggesting that the site had contained dwellings since at least the 14th century. The work did not reach the base of archaeological deposits. [Au(adp)] |
