Abstract: |
Excavations were carried out at the site of Bury Castle, a SAM, which until recently had been used as an unofficial car park. Three main phases of activity were demonstrated. The first, dating to the late 14th century, consisted of the construction of a timber-framed manor house on a platform within a moat. The early 15th century had seen the rebuilding of the house on stone foundations. The final phase, in the late 15th century, consisted of reduction of the moat, construction and buttressing of the revetment wall of the platform, and construction of a stone manor house. A stone-built structure had also been inserted into a section of the revetment wall. [Au(adp)] |
