Abstract: |
Archaeological recording was undertaken during the excavation of cable trenches for a floodlighting scheme at the west side of the castle. A number of features were identified including a line of five re-used flagstones; areas of building debris; a drain; a possible wall within the garden area; a sequence of burnt, sandy clayey layers above a thick stone rubble layer within the forecourt area; part of the curtain wall of the original medieval castle; masonry features by the entrance to the castle; and a consolidated layer of stone representing a 'platform' outside the Little Castle.
