Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken. This was due to a burst water main requiring an emergency watching brief as it lay within the UNESCO World Heritage Site boundary. An investigation trench was excavated over a broken section of water main. The investigation trench lay approximately 10m to the south of Hadrian's Wall and approximately 34m to the north of the Vallum. After removal of the topsoil which was revealed to have been on average 0.40m in depth, mixed clay and decomposed vegetation deposits were observed to a depth of 1.40m where the broken water main was encountered. The watching brief ensured that no archaeological features or deposits associated with Hadrian's Wall were disturbed during the works. [Au(adp)] |
