Abstract: |
Excavations on this site had identified features potentially spanning over a thousand years and produced evidence of both settlement and burial practice. The excavations uncovered a round house, within the gulley of which c.90 sherds of Iron Age pottery were recovered. A series of enclosure ditches, possibly of later prehistoric date, were also identified. An Anglo-Saxon cemetery was identified, with fifteen cremation burials and seventeen inhumations. Fourteen cremation urns were found, varying in condition from fragmentary to complete; one cremation had no surviving urn, which may have been due to the vessel having been inverted and truncated. Due to the effects of acidic soils, only a small quantity of human remains survived, although c.250 grave goods were retrieved. [Au(abr)] |
