Abstract:
Watching briefs and excavations were carried out as part of an ongoing project at the site of an extension to a gravel quarry, following an evaluation undertaken in 1996. A buried river channel recorded earlier was found to have given way to a series of shallow but widespread peaty deposits, the earliest and thickest of which overlay an isolated pit and a group of features comprising a multi-phase series of shallow gullies cutting the upper fills of a series of deeper pits. These features followed a north-south alignment, forming a 'boundary complex'. A later system of land division was indicated by numerous ditches on two principal alignments. Other features belonging to this phase or its successor included two pits, one of which contained brushwood which had been preserved by waterlogging, and a four-post structure typical of Iron Age settlement sites. A major concentration of pits was identified in the south-eastern corner of extraction zone 1, at the east end of the site. Over the immediate sub-ploughsoil surface was scattered pottery, ranging in date from early/mid Saxon to post-medieval. In the western part of zone 1, the remains of ridge and furrow of medieval or possibly Saxon date and a complex series of re-cut ditches were recorded. Pottery suggested that the ditch sequence had begun in the late Saxon period and continued into medieval times. Part of a burned down structure was revealed in the central part of the quarry area. This was undated, but had been cut by the ridge and furrow, and was considered likely to have been part of a Saxon settlement which had been found during the evaluation. [AIP]
