Abstract:
The archaeological evaluation was undertaken on a site propsoed as an extension to Fountains Dairy. Within the western part of the site lay a scheduled area which incorporated the earthworks forming the outer bailey of Mobray Castle. Three methods of survey were required: a topographic survey of extant features within and adjacent to the site; geophysical survey of a sample of the site and the trial excavation of features identified during the geophysical survey. A number of features of archaeological significance were identified. The earliest of these was a possible enclosure ditch and area of burning predating early medieval ploughing on the site. Remains of medieval ploughing were well preserved at the west end of the site which survived as ridge and furrow, the gradiometer survey showed that these features continued to the west of the site. A bailey which formed part of Mobray Castle (SAM No. 26935) lay to the west edge of the proposed development area and the earthworks which delimited the feature were well preserved. Other earthworks were to the south of the bailey but it was difficult to say whether or not they were contemporary with the castle. [Au]
