Abstract: |
The site was heavily disturbed in places by drainage feature and modern services. An undisturbed area was encountered in the west part of the site that contained six rectangular pits linked by a narrow ditch. These were thought to be tanning pits on the strength of their layout and the inclusions of bone waste. Provisional examination suggested that the features were of late medieval date, although a few sherds of early post-medieval pottery were found in the linking ditch. A trench in the south half of the site located what was thought to be an early post-medieval boundary wall. Also observed on the site was an unusually raised flowerbed made up of over 50 pieces of reused moulded stonework from a medieval ecclesiastical building. The majority of the pieces date from before 1300, and are thought to have been collected from the abbey ruins. [Au(abr)] |
