Abstract:
The evaluation revealed evidence for the disposal of domestic rubbish on the site in the 16th century and again in the 17th and early 18th centuries, when ditches as well as pits were dug. Deposits of 16th-18th century date were found to survive close to the High Street only in trench 1, where it was known from cartographic evidence that no development had taken place since the mid-19th century. However, no evidence for buildings of 16th to 18th century date were found in trench 1, though the quantity of rubbish encountered suggested the likely presence of a building close by. [Au(abr)]
