Abstract:
A desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a library was undertaken. Isolated Mesolithic and Iron Age artefacts had been found within 40m of the site, and Roman buildings had been excavated in the area. Evidence of Roman brickearth and gravel quarrying and industrial activity had also been recorded. The remains of late Saxon timber buildings and waterfront structures had been found at several sites in the vicinity, whilst Saxon features had been excavated 30m to the north-west. During a site visit, vaults were observed which were interpreted as the cellar walls of a 19th century building, and a short length of undated wall was noted. The site was found to contain at least two areas of preserved archaeological deposits, and was thought to have the potential to contain others. It was intended to temporarily backfill excavations which were open on the eastern side of the site, which could damage or destroy the identified deposits. It was therefore recommended that further analysis of the deposits should be carried out prior to backfilling. [AIP]
