Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out within the northern part of a proposed residential development site, which lay within an archaeologically sensitive area. Cropmarks of prehistoric or Romano-British date had been recorded in the near vicinity, and an Iron Age/Romano-British settlement site lay to the south. Palaeolithic handaxes and a Neolithic or Bronze Age flint had also been found nearby. During the evaluation, an Early Neolithic pit was recorded. This contained forty sherds of Early Neolithic pottery and a number of worked flints, which probably represented a single knapping event of short duration, of which not all of the pieces had been found. It was concluded that the lack of other archaeological evidence across the site suggested that this part of the development area had not been subject to intense activity in the past. [AIP] |
