Abstract: |
An archaeological field evaluation was undertaken in respect of plans to build an extension on the south side of the church. This followed a geophysical survey of the churchyard. A test pit and a strip trench were excavated on the site of a proposed building extension and a further trench was excavated on the site of a proposed new path on the north-west side of the church. The evaluation revealed the wall of the northern cloister walk of the former Augustinian Priory that once formed part of a larger site here. Part of a probable wall nearer to the south side of the church was also discovered, though its function was unclear. In the area immediately north-west of the church, limited evidence was revealed for a blacksmith's building that stood there in the 18th century. [Au(adp)] |
