Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during groundworks for a retail development. Earlier desk-based assessment of the site had identified a potential along its eastern boundary for deposits relating to the medieval development of the subsidiary town of Compton. During the watching brief, two post-medieval features were observed, the natures of which could not be determined, and a post-medieval wall was found. It was established that deposits relating to the medieval development of the town had been removed by post-medieval activity, through the continuing development of the Compton Street frontage. The interior of the site did not appear to have been developed prior to the construction of Coopers Mill, although a series of modern layers identified beneath the mill's foundations suggested that there had been extensive remodelling of the site.
