Abstract: |
The evaluation revealed fragments of prehistoric pottery and possible loom weights, which may have indicated some activity or occupation of this date in the general vicinity. Other finds indicated the presence and survival of features of 18th century date in the western end of the site. The existence of the remains of a Second World War Anderson air-raid shelter was noted. Archaeological recording noted a large number of pot sherds. The evidence of the pottery suggested that these were in use from the 13th to the 18th centuries, or later. Their presence appeared to show that the rear end of the burgage plot was used for the disposal of domestic rubbish and building debris over a long period. A greenish fill suggested that they were also used as cess pits. [Au(adp)] |
