Abstract:
The desk-based assessment was undertaken prior to the proposed creation of a new access road and two new buildings. The site lay in Henbury, which was known to date at least from AD 691. By the end of the 18th century, the fields containing the site were part of Norton Farm. Cartographic evidence attributed the name Pidley to a number of fields possibly suggesting they were often wet or marshy. The study showed that the site did not lose its rural character until the construction of the school in 1958. A number of Romano-British burials, thought to have been part of a small cemetery, were found during levelling works on part of the school playing field in 1982, and the conjectured line of the Roman road from Sea Mills to Gloucester crossed the school grounds in an approximate south to north direction. It was possible the lane shown on the 1825 plan of 'Sampson Lands' as lying between Stile Acre and Broadlong Furlong represented the line of this road. The study found that, excluding the footprint of the existing buildings and the area of playing field levelled in 1982, the archaeological potential of the school site was generally high. [Au(adp)]
