Abstract:
Archaeological investigations and observations were undertaken during the course of drainage works at Lacock Abbey in February 1996. The work comprised a watching brief during drain-laying in the Stable Court and East Terrace, and a series of excavation trenches in the East Field. Guided by the results of the excavations, it was intended that a waste treatment plant together with pipelines should be constructed in locations where no significant damage would be done to buried archaeological remains. Drainage runs in Stable Court encountered no archaeology, and the installation of a drain along the foot of the ha-ha in the East Field exposed inactive drains or culverts of unknown date. A portion of a medieval stone coffin was recovered from recent soils at the base of the ha-ha. The areas investigated in the East Field revealed a wall and floor with associated post-medieval demolition rubble, post-Dissolution demolition layers which also contained medieval finds, a rubble spread, and an undated shallow linear feature running parallel to the course of an 18th century mill leat.
