Abstract: |
Archaeological monitoring had shown that the tenement plots within the site were very intensively cultivated, possibly removing traces of earlier activity. However, a number of possible features of post-medieval date were identified in plots D & E. A representative selection of pottery was recovered from the cultivation soil, confirming a long history of exploitation from the early medieval period onwards. The boundaries between the plots were investigated and recorded, producing pottery from the 14th to 17th and 17th to 18th centuries. Remains of the 19th century cottages that formerly extended from Fore Street to the western edge of the site were observed and recorded. An associated cob wall was also observed. Part of a 19th century stone-capped drain was uncovered at the west end of the northern row of new houses. [Au(adp)] |
