Abstract: |
The evaluation and mitigation trenches together represented an excavated area of 416 square metres. It was anticipated that the site might have contained features relating to a possible Bronze Age settlement, which had been identified on the opposite side of Old Road in 1996. No evidence was found to indicate the presence of a prehistoric settlement or enclosure ditch. Only one sherd of securely stratified pottery was recovered. This was a sherd of medieval courseware retrieved from the fill of a shallow curing ditch. The profile and fill of the ditch were very similar to several other undated ditches investigated. It was likely that these other features were also medieval (or later) in date, perhaps representing contemporaneous elements of a strip field system. Medieval occupation within the area was suggested by a number of residual sherds of courseware observed within the topsoil throughout the development site. [Au(adp)] |
