Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out at the site of the medieval moat of Showell, possibly one of the earliest examples of this class of monument in the area. After the commencement of works at the site, waterlogging necessitated a change to parts of the development design. Damage was caused to part of the moat platform; a trial trench was therefore excavated under archaeological supervision, to re-establish the height of archaeological deposits. The trench revealed deposits associated with the moat platform, and possible remains associated with a ?stone revetment. Undisturbed deposits were noted at the edge of the development area. Further archaeological work was not recommended, owing to problems caused by waterlogging and to the location of the site. [AIP] |
