Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken of the site prior to its proposed redevelopment. In 1990 a programme of background assessment and fieldwalking had identified eleven sites of potential archaeological significance in the immediate vicinity of the proposed development area. In 1991 trial trenches were dug to further investigate these sites. These investigations revealed concentrations of pottery from the Roman, early medieval, medieval and post-medieval periods, suggesting multi-period occuption (Site I), a number of furlong-sealed late Roman ditches (Site II), a concentration of worked flints (Site III), a number of cropmarks to the east of the site (Site IV), a distinct cluster of Romano-British and medieval pottery (Site V), a Neolithic flint scatter (Site VI0), a Bronze Age flint scatter (Site VII), a semi-linear concentration of worked and burnt flint (Site IX) and an area of recovery of a number of Mesolithic bladelets and microliths (Site X).
