Abstract:
The desk-based assessment was undertaken of the site prior to its proposed development. The site lay within an Area of Archaeological Value and part of the site fell within a Conservation Area. Although there were no listed buildings within the site, several Grade I and II listed buildings were located nearby. Evidence revealed that there was potential for chance finds from the prehistoric, Roman and Anglo-Saxon periods, but until the late 12th century the majority of the site was probably uncultivated, cultivated or pasture land. From the late 12th century onwards the site formed part of the manor of North Hall probably continued in agricultural or cultivated use. Burials of plague victims may have taken place within its boundaries during the late 11th century. The late 18th century development of the site was considered to be significant, one of the earliest examples of back-to-back terraces in Leeds, which would give evidence of living conditions. Although these developments would have had a significant impact on earlier remains the possibility of burials remaining in situ could not be discounted. It was concluded that building would have a severe impact on any surviving archaeological remains. [Au(abr)]
