Abstract: |
A small evaluation and resistivity survey were carried out on an area of lawn at Conisbrough Castle following the collapse of a small area of the lawn. The feature that caused the collapse appeared to be a Victorian cess pit or culvert probably associated with the Lodge (now the tea rooms). The feature comprised a square brick culvert which had been constructed over a circular aperture at the top of a bell shaped brick structure. This structure had been backfilled with rubble, bricks and roofing tiles. It was not possible to excavate the feature fully or to establish its depth, origin or function. The square brick culvert was positioned inside an unmortared stone wall which may have represented an earlier manhole, or construction feature. The resistivity survey suggested that the feature probably did not extend beyond the bounds of the trench. [Au] |
