Abstract: |
A desk-based study was undertaken to assess the archaeological implications of proposals to demolish an existing office block and erect new offices at 21-23 Valpy Street. A number of archaeological remains had been recorded within circa 300 metres of the proposed development, mostly dated to the post-Roman period, although no remains had previously been recorded on the proposal site. Potential for burials and associated settlement evidence relating to Saxon Reading, features associated with a documented Viking camp and remains associated with the 12th century abbey within the proposal area was highlighted.
