Abstract: |
Twenty preliminary inspection trenches opened to evaluate a site to the rear of Holme Church Lane and Jack Taylor Lane identified that the heaviest concentration of archaeological features increased in density towards the Beck at the southern edge of the site. Following the preliminary evaluation, a large open area close to the Beck was investigated, and two long trenches cut at right-angles in the northern part of the proposed development site. Extensive remains relating to 13th century and later brick and tile industries including extraction pits (subsequently backfilled as rubbish pits), a large brick-built structure and a tile kiln were revealed. Traces of regular partitioning of the site into tenements marked by stone wall foundations, occuring at some time after circa 1300, and an associated building were also identified. Later deposits and features included evidence of 15th and 16th century domestic activity and a 19th century well and barrel pit. [AIP] |
