Abstract: |
The watching brief was undertaken during the excavation of a foundation trench for an extension to the rear of the existing property. The subsoil was sealed by mixed layers of sandy loam containing post-medieval pottery, one of which was cut by a limestone drain aligned roughly north-east/south-west. The site appeared to have been extensively landscaped in the post-medieval period, probably during the construction of the existing house. However, below the foundations of the existing brick-built house, substantial limestone foundations were identified which seemed to relate to an earlier structure. This structure appeared to be on the same layout as the current house, and may have dated to the medieval period. Since no residual medieval material was recovered it was more probable that the structure dated to the early post-medieval period. [Au(abr)] |
