Abstract: |
Excavations in advance of the Rugby Western Ring Main were undertaken. Observation of the pipeline easement through an area of cropmarks south of the modern village revealed part of the medieval village of Cawston. A small assemblage of flintwork indicated later Mesolithic or earlier Neolithic activity. At the south end of the excavated area the pipeline cut through a corner of a large sub-rectangular enclosure. Two stone buildings were identified within the enclosure (a possible medieval manorial complex) on the very edge of the ditch. On the north side of the enclosure the presence of a rubble floor and a very large quantity of iron working slag indicated a further building. This building was evidently a smithy although no evidence of its walls survived. Pottery from the site suggested occupation during the 12th and 13th centuries and comparatively early desertion or shrinkage in the 14th/15th century, which accorded with documentary references of enclosure by the monks of Pipewell Abbey before 1486.
