Abstract: |
A desk-based asssessment was undertaken of the site in advance of the proposed refurbishment for residential and commercial use of the buildings on the site. It was likely that topographical and environmental information on channels and alluvial deposits associated with the prehistoric, Roman and medieval River Tyburn would survive. It was also possible that Roman and medieval remains associated with a small settlement centered around a bridge across the Tyburn at Oxford Street might survive. Post medieval quarrying and building may have affected the surival of any deposits. The report therefore concluded that the proposed refurbishment of the existing basements may have had some impact on potential archaeological stratigraphy.
