Abstract: |
An archaeological desk top assessment was undertaken in order to assess the likley degree of archaeological survival on the site and the impact that proposed redevelopment and associated groundworks may have on such remains. The site was located within the Paddinton and Lillestone Villages Area of Special Archaeological Priority as identified in the Unitary Development Plan. The relatively superficial remains of the original Saxon and medieval villages and their subsequent development were likely to lie within the first c.2m depth from the modern ground surface on the basis of archaeological investigations in the vicinity. The depth of the existing basements on the study site was, however, c.2.8m, suggesting that the majority of such remains had already been removed in the construction of the present building.
