Abstract: |
As a result of a desktop assessment undertaken in 1992 which identified the Newington II area to be of archaeological interest, a watching brief was undertaken annually during overburden removal to record anything of interest exposed. Inspection of the site revealed no significant cultural activity, and only a few sherds of residual post-medieval pottery and fire cracked pebbles. Four distinct sedimentary units were recognised across the site. Two basal units were interpreted as riverine and lacustrine aggradations from the last glaciation which may have had the potential to contain some archaeologically significant remains. This was deemed as being the focus of future watching briefs. [AIP] |
