Abstract: |
An archaeological excavation was undertaken following the discovery of a human skeleton in a CCTV stanchion pit at York Railway Station. The uppermost deposits seen were the tarmac surface of platform 1 and associated levelling deposits, which were clearly modern. Beneath the modern deposits was a burial in a grave, which was cut into natural sub-soil and sealed by build up deposits 0.42m thick. The burial would have been totally destroyed by further excavation of the stanchion pit, so the portion of it within the pit was lifted. [Au] |
