Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment and walkover survey was carried out on the Tame Valley Canal to the north of Birmingham as the first part of a heritage recording pilot project on the Birmingham Canal Navigations. This 26km canal had been opened in1844 and was produced to reduce the overcrowding on the original Birmingham Canal by allowing boats to avoid the centre of Birmingham. Summary account of thematic classes of historic features within the canal cartilage; The Tame Valley Canal, towpath surfacing, wharves, basins, locks and associated structures, bridges (cast iron accommodation bridges, masonry accommodation bridges, roving bridges, towpath bridges, aqueducts); water management (sluices, narrows and mid-canal piers, pumping); other Features.
