Abstract: |
The earliest activity recorded in the study area comprised a group of burnt mounds of probable Bronze Age date. Five main phases of Roman military activity have been identified at the Metchley Forts, ranging in date from the late AD40s to AD75-120. Traces of a vicus have also been recorded. In the post-medieval period a hunting park was established and later the area was turned over to agriculture. The Worcester-Birmingham Canal cut across the forts in 1791, and a railway was constructed in 1822. [Au(abr)] |
