Abstract: |
An auger survey was carried out at the proposed site of an extension to a hospital car park, which lay close to the site of a 9th century abbey. The site lay over the westernmost of three postulated lines for the eastern defences of the Saxon burh of Shaftesbury. A piece of dressed stone had been found during the excavation of test-pits at the site. During the augering survey, a linear depression was recorded along a road frontage. This may have represented the former line of a defensive ditch, or could have been a former line or edge of the road, backfilled and levelled during use of the site as a garden. It was proposed that the trial trenching stage of the evaluation should investigate this feature. [AIP] |
